Why Your Website Isn’t Getting Traffic

Why Your Website Isn't Getting Traffic

Unless consumers use your business name as a verb (“google it” for example) you probably need to put some effort into being discovered. Everyone with a website is trying to attract more traffic, and the best way to do that is to rank higher in search engine results. You probably already know all this, so why in the world isn’t your website getting traffic?!

Blogging has taken a backseat.

Many businesses underestimate the significance of producing a blog regularly. They think “Who takes the time to read blogs anyway?” Well, lots of people do!  When web marketers conduct performance tracking, they see just how many users find websites through blog posts.

Think of the last time you searched the web for how to do something or for reviews on a specific product. It is extremely likely you visited a few blogs without even noticing.

Here are 5 examples of how a consistent blog can benefit your website:

  1. Gives you more opportunities to use keywords. The more chances you have to use keywords, the better. To avoid the “keyword stuffing” method banned by Google, you must use keywords smoothly in a way that is useful for readers.
  2. Educates your target audience. Your target audience, or buyer personas, are on what inbound marketers call “the buyer’s journey”. This journey involves research relating to your industry’s products or services. Don’t you want to be the one pointing them in the right direction instead of your competitors?
  3. Boosts your reputation with search engines. The more helpful your content is, the more search engines like Google consider you credible. Trustworthiness plays a big part in their ranking system.

  4. Secures backlinks. If you are producing content that people find interesting, they are bound to share it and use your content in their own blogs. When they link back to your website (backlink) this helps Google rank you higher since they assume you’re important.
  5. Shows your visitors you are present. If your last blog post is dated in 2011, this sends a negative message to visitors. If you can’t keep your own blog updated, what does that say about the quality of service they will receive from you.

Your business is absent on social media.

Did you know that 78% of the U.S. population now has a social networking profile? With so many people connected, it only makes sense that your business should be present here. Regularly posting on social media networks reminds users about your business.

Promoting your blogs here is a huge source of traffic for your website. Not only will users click on links you’ve shared, they have the ability to share it with their connections and increase your influence. Building your brand identity on social media will connect you with your target audience and establish your business as up-to-date and relevant.

You aren’t using the right keywords.

Keywords are how search engines rank your website in search engine results. They are terms users type into search engines when conducting a search. If your business isn’t using them, it’s nearly impossible for engines like Google to know which searches your website should show up in.

While most people are aware of this concept, they aren’t using the right keywords. Just by knowing a little about your industry and products you can make guesses on appropriate keywords. When a web marketer conducts a keyword audit, they are using real data instead of assumptions.

A keyword audit produces a list of applicable keywords, how many times they are being searched, and the level of competition for each. If keywords have a 90% rate of competition, chances of ranking for them are slim to none even with high searches.

With the right combination of low competition and high searches, your business can begin targeting the right keywords.

Your website isn’t based on data and continuous improvement.

How do you know if different approaches are working? Your website should be producing real data you can see.

Growth-driven design (GDD) is an alternative to traditional web design that is transforming websites into effective marketing tools. A website design and marketing firm works with your website over the course of a year by conducting monthly testing and making improvements.

These are a few examples of data you can expect to see with GDD:

  • Which sources are bringing in traffic.
  • User demographics.
  • Behavior once on your website.
  • Pages that are diverting traffic.

By knowing these things and more, your marketer will be able to develop a marketing strategy to really increase traffic. Another bonus is that GDD will convert more of these additional visitors.

The only thing worse than making the same mistake for years, is making that mistake for one more day. Start reversing the above and you’ll be on your way to a boost in website traffic!
