How to Get Started With Social Media For Your Small Business

So…you’re a social media newbie. Welcome! I promise it’s not as scary as it seems. But when you’re just getting started, social media may seem overwhelming, so here are a few important rules to keep in mind.

1. Pick one thing…and become the expert there.

As a small business, to create a profile on all of the major social networks – and maintain them – is a full time job in and of itself.

So start simple.

Ask your customers where they spend their time and start there. Whether it’s Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, or another network altogether, go where your customers are. Then, become comfortable with that network.

2. Listen and learn.

While on that network, focus on what’s important: your customers. Pay attention to what people like…and what they don’t like. It goes without saying, but do more of what they like and less of what they don’t.

Learn through experimentation. Show your personality through social media and listen while you do it.

3. Don’t speak unless spoken to.

This one’s just a joke. Don’t be afraid to speak up.

Many of our clients think that their customers see each and every post they publish. That’s not the case. Your customers will spend their time online based on their work schedule (time of day), what they like already (social media algorithms), and more.

4. Create content

One of the most valuable things you can do in social media – or online, for that matter – is create valuable content for your users. By providing valuable content, you’re establishing yourself as the expert in your niche. You’re the go-to person for lumber, or hotel accommodations, or jewelry design: whatever your small business may be.
